zarkyb writes:(new) 08.01.2004, 14:47 GMT+1

I hope you know it's probably totally illegal to be using the models from the AvP game. Also, I'm sure it's pretty dubious, legality-wise, to be basing the TC on Aliens versus Predator, considering there are already at least two AvP games out there. I don't think Fox would be very happy, and IIRC, someone's had trouble like this before. Just a warning.

deathz0r writes:(new) 08.01.2004, 17:15 GMT+1

I smell a foxed project.

Apocsoft writes:(new) 08.01.2004, 21:17 GMT+1

Well i will ask about the legal issues, and i will release a demo and see if anyone moans....

Jow writes:(new) 09.01.2004, 05:25 GMT+1

Looks a bit simple.. can the aliens walk in walls and ceiling then? Sounds interesting anyway...

Apocsoft writes:(new) 10.01.2004, 17:48 GMT+1

The Aliens are quick as fuck.... they can climb up walls on to ledges, and dodge your fire, (so can you if your playing as the Alien,) but you will have to wait and see as it might not be released for legal reasons, we will see!

Overlord X writes:(new) 11.01.2004, 00:31 GMT+1

Converting Jaguar games over to Doom? :)

What's next, Iron Soldier?

In terms of legality, I don't think they are going to complain. When they made the Doom 64 TC, they didn't run into any copyright issues with Midway or ID software, simple because they didn't stand to gain anything from releasing it. If they were selling it and making money off the name, that would be another story...so you should be fine, just as long as you offer it for free, and also don't lay claim to creating the original graphics/resource materials.

zarkyb writes:(new) 11.01.2004, 16:16 GMT+1

It's the fact that AvP is a recent game, unlike Doom64, and this mod contains models ripped directly from that game, that worries me the most. Plus it's Fox, who have been known to be a bit fussy over things like this (Aliens TC for Quake, anyone?). Also there's an AvP movie coming out soon so that might cause problems.

NiGHTMARE writes:(new) 11.01.2004, 16:31 GMT+1

Exactly, where do you think the term "foxed project" came from? :)

ravage writes:(new) 11.01.2004, 18:31 GMT+1

Belive it or not, but I think there are still some AvP mods from '95 on 3darchives. But they sucked so much ass that you weren't entirely sure if they were con meth or what. (there were also that were aliens vs predators vs terminator, ew)

Overlord X writes:(new) 12.01.2004, 01:52 GMT+1

Hmmm...I suppose you do have a point, but are they going to invest in the attorney's and court fees to go after a private party, that is simply making a game modification, and doesn't stand to make any money off the name? It wouldn't be worth it to them.

Hell, if the mod is GOOD , they might be interested in it themselves! Counter Strike was originally a modification of Half Life.

NiGHTMARE writes:(new) 13.01.2004, 00:30 GMT+1

Well first they issue a "cease and desist letter". They'd only take it to court if this letter were ignored, and trust me they would do that, if only to show everyone else that they're no getting lapse with their copyrights.

Oh and the money it would cost them in court fees, etc might seem like a lot to you or me, but when it comes to companies like Fox, court fees are small change :)

BTW, they're are NOT going to be interested in selling this mod, for several reasons. First of all, this mod uses certain resources (textures, models, etc) that don't belong to Fox, but rather the AvP developers (Monolith, Rebellion, etc). Second, it uses a modified version of the Doom engine (i.e. EDGE) which is covered by a licensing system that would be incompatible with a commercial product. Second, no company in their right mind would try to sell a game that still uses the original Doom engine nowadays anyway (no matter how modified).

stx-Vile writes:(new) 13.01.2004, 05:18 GMT+1

I would indeed be careful about this project. I've mentioned before (though only once) on the Doomworld forums that an Aliens TC for Quake some years ago (back when the game was a year or two old) was shut down by FOX and if it ever resurfaced again.. which it didn't.. it was going to have a price tag. Of course one can argue that the same thing never happened to the Aliens TC for Doom, but with FOX, you never know... actually using their resources doesn't help your case though, and should FOX somehow get wind of this project, hello lawsuit. :)

stx-Vile writes:(new) 13.01.2004, 05:24 GMT+1

I'm new here so I see an edit function isn't available, but I'll manage, I just had some post-posting(?) thoughts. :)

I wouldn't worry about it too much, as Overlord X said, perhaps because they'll have nothing to gain from releasing the project, but then Aliens Quake was never planned to be released retail. The thing I would worry about is that the Quake TC was nearly finished before FOX decided to step in, which was probably a serious blow with so much work invested into a project meant only to be released online. I knew I should have held onto it, but Quake has been deleted a few times off and on.

Overlord X writes:(new) 13.01.2004, 06:21 GMT+1

Nightmare, of course they wouldn't be interested in it.

Overlord X writes:(new) 13.01.2004, 06:29 GMT+1

Nightmare, of course they wouldn't be interested in it, because Doom is a game so old. I was just using that example to re-enforce my point that game mods are not the root of all evil. I was just saying sometimes game modifications are bought out and sold by the original game company, which of course isn't the case this time around.

I want to re-iterate my previous point, that what it all comes down to in the end is money. If they were to insist on investing the time and money into going after a private party making a game mod legally, despite the fact that neither the company or the private party making the mod stand to neither lose or gain any money based upon it, then that wouldn't be a very smart business deicison. After all their efforts, they would only end up with a waste of time and money, and a small article in the bottom left corner of a page in Game Informer for people to continuously ridicule what a waste of time the whole process is.

If anything, they should feel glad somebody cares enough about their game in the first place to want to modify it.

Ralphis writes:(new) 13.01.2004, 08:45 GMT+1

"If anything, they should feel glad somebody cares enough about their game in the first place to want to modify it."

You see, the thing is that they're not modding THEIR game. Their resources are being stolen and being used for modding in OUR game. Of course, I'm ok with it. If you guys don't make a big thing about it Fox won't even find out

Overlord X writes:(new) 13.01.2004, 22:10 GMT+1

Same idea...modding, using resources in other games...

Nick_Perrin writes:(new) 26.04.2004, 03:49 GMT+1

woah, another project apoc! aliens versus predator, if done well, should be kick-ass!

DI writes:(new) 18.11.2004, 20:54 GMT+1

I hope no one phuk'n ratts because I wanna play AvP edge maps. Deep water, floor over floor sounds cool. BTW this might sound like a stupid question, but which port has more features, legacy or edge?

R u okey Chronoteeth?.. btw im thinking of droping the alien & predator bits, and just having a space station overun with aliens. be compertion for Rone :)!

Nmn writes:(new) 22.12.2004, 19:17 GMT+1

Don't Apoc. I've been waiting a very long time for this wad. At least release what You have done so far, or wait until Your motivation gets back, but don't abandon it. On a side note, Myself, couldn't edit for Edge. Not without ACS ;)

Apocsoft writes:(new) 22.12.2004, 20:49 GMT+1

I didn't realise people cared! Thanx Nmn you have given me some motivation, ive decided not use any Avp game resources, and only use sprites from the Archive, which is how it started out. this will stop any trouble, hopefully.

The next problem is texture replacement because i cant use the doom textures, and the ones in the screenshots are from Avp.

btw i could't edit for zdoom. Not without RTS :P

Nmn writes:(new) 22.12.2004, 21:44 GMT+1

There was something called "Aliens vs Terminator vs Predator" somewhere in the archives. Had some neat textures. I believe Unreal (You have it?) had a marvellous texture set that clearly reminds of the colonies.

Apocsoft writes:(new) 22.12.2004, 22:19 GMT+1

Ive just downloaded it from the archive, some very nice textures in their, i do have unreal, but the problem with taking textures from a game like that is, when you apply the doom palette they tend to look out of place and wierd.

Unless i use a diffrent palette but even then i will have trouble with everything else looking shit.

Nmn writes:(new) 23.12.2004, 19:32 GMT+1

Wow. o_O What atmosphere. I'm greatly looking forward for this. It looks simply awesome.

edited 23.12.2004, 20:26 GMT+1

Thanx again Nmn, you really have motivated me! I took your advice with the textures and i've been redoing subevel 3 all day. Also i've added the same lighting from close combat, so there is shadows and things.

2nd Note Plz do not go on about FOX, i've read enuf!

And last but not least i need a artist to make me 5 sprites, which are kind of crucial!

PEOPLE this is not a conversions it is "based" off the game its perfectly legacl considering he is making everything himself [or is he] but this looks really cool anyways but you might want to change the name becuase i belive the name is a trademark

Chronoteeth writes:(new) 23.12.2004, 21:42 GMT+1

The old shotgun has awlays been one of my favorites. You guys have been known for good custom weapon selection for your mods.

GeeDawgg writes:(new) 23.12.2004, 21:58 GMT+1

Lookin' good. Very nice atmosphere you've created with the lighting. It's tough to make EDGE levels have good lighting and to make them have a sort of atmosphere/mood-related feel to them, but you've done a great job. Can't wait to see more screenshots.

GeeDawgg writes:(new) 23.12.2004, 21:58 GMT+1

Thanks for comments i will upload more screenshots tomorrow,

@MR.INSANE- I havent made anything myself, except the coding & levels, but credit will be given of course for the sprites and texures, and thanks for clearing that up btw...

@GeeDawgg- Glad u like the lighting, its dynamic so it casts a nice shadow which gives a good effect and helps to create the atmosphere, which is kinda there for the marine already coz the aliens can kill you in about 2 seconds and the predator in about 1 (if ur lucky) but thats only if your not shooting at them first!

Chronoteeth writes:(new) 23.12.2004, 23:46 GMT+1

Apocsoft writes:(new) 24.12.2004, 10:15 GMT+1

Chronoteeth... WTF! quad shotgun??? The Marine only has 4 weapons, Normal shotgun (thats the 1 u can see) pulse rifle w/grenade laucher, flamethrower & smartgun okey?

Chronoteeth writes:(new) 24.12.2004, 13:49 GMT+1

I know I know, it's just that, well, you can't quite trust custom weapons wads sometimes, they awlays use it (well, I mean the armas series)

Also, if you want....I can hook you up with weapon sprites for alien trilogy.

Apocsoft writes:(new) 24.12.2004, 13:54 GMT+1

You know chrono, that sounds a good idea, but it would make this mod illegal again won't it? send them to me at...

Lobo writes:(new) 03.01.2005, 22:12 GMT+1

Fox only went after people because at that time they were about to release their own Aliens games. As long as you're not doing it for Doom3 or Quake 4 or some new motor I wouldn't worry about it.
Hell, look at all the Aliens stuff in the Doom FTP archives for gods sake.

Keep up the good work: I'm watching this one closely :)

BTW You can have 32 bit full colour images in Edge (no Doom palette limits in Edge) so go ahead and use those textures.

Apocsoft writes:(new) 03.01.2005, 22:17 GMT+1

Cheers again Lobo (why again well, i've just replyed in your forum), Also i've already updated the textures to hi-res 16m colors i just have not had the time to update the screenies.

Chronoteeth writes:(new) 11.01.2005, 20:06 GMT+1

Hey, if it helps, I will provide the weapons from alien trilogy.

Fiend writes:(new) 13.01.2005, 21:19 GMT+1
edited 13.01.2005, 21:20 GMT+1

I could get weapons from Aliens:Online.

Apocsoft writes:(new) 14.01.2005, 19:18 GMT+1

-Fiend, i didn't think they released that! i had a video clip of it, they would be better than the ones from alien trilogy... also it had the alien claws aswell IIRC,

Chronoteeth writes:(new) 14.01.2005, 20:51 GMT+1

Apocsoft writes:(new) 14.01.2005, 21:06 GMT+1

Well i've got to keep my options open Chrono, i like the AT sprites aswell. I dont now how he will get them, also the games not in print and there no websites up about it.

Fiend writes:(new) 14.01.2005, 21:36 GMT+1

I've got some pros and cons of the Aliens:Online sprites.

They're simply beautiful. Here is a sampling I threw together:
There are weapon graphics for the pulse rifle, smartgun, pistol, shotgun, motion tracker, flamethrower, grenades, land mines, alien claws and tail.
Each weapon has regular frames and reloading frames.

They're large sprites (Pulse rifle is (112x172)
They may look awkward in the doom palette.
The weapon flashes seem to be in some weird amimation file type that I can't edit. The alien and marine sprites are also in this format.
The weapon graphics have illuminated barrels, but no flashes.

Apocsoft writes:(new) 15.01.2005, 01:53 GMT+1

Don't worry about the size or the palette coz edge has images.ddf, in which you can use 32bit texuters and scale them aswell. The alien claws and tail would be mega useful...

Fiend writes:(new) 15.01.2005, 02:29 GMT+1

Then everythings cool. Give me an e-mail and I can send weapon graphics your way.

Chronoteeth writes:(new) 15.01.2005, 03:52 GMT+1
edited 15.01.2005, 03:53 GMT+1

So no AT sprites then? Damn.

EDIT: WAit a sec... You don't have a pistol yet....>:)

Apocsoft writes:(new) 15.01.2005, 13:39 GMT+1

send there please, and i see what i can do. I was looking at them again and their are very nice sprites, i wasn't plannig to add a pistol anyway, the shotgun's bad enuf.

Chronoteeth writes:(new) 15.01.2005, 19:22 GMT+1

I know, but please let me provide one?

Apocsoft writes:(new) 16.01.2005, 13:53 GMT+1

Sorry Chrono, the pack already got a pistol, those sprites are amazing! so much detail and better looking than the AT ones. Thanks Fiend there going to look cool... btw i was wondering can you get the sounds out of the game?

Fiend writes:(new) 16.01.2005, 18:03 GMT+1

I can't get the sounds. They seem to be in these weird types of files, all of which I have never seen and can't open with any of my game tools:

Apocsoft writes:(new) 16.01.2005, 21:12 GMT+1

Nevermind Fiend, but thanks a bunch for the weapon sprites, they awesome! I'll have to wait for the next test build of edge to come out before i can implement them..

Apocsoft writes:(new) 09.02.2005, 22:43 GMT+1

Thanks all... don't worry dethtoll i will put up more screenshots soon, (i'll try png next time) Also i will be wanting beta testers soon(ish), so don't worry Chrono! your be one of the first to know...

I know its alot to ask but I wouldn't mind some help on this project, not like mapping (unless you wanted) or coding, more textures, sounds and storyline. Any offers?

dethtoll writes:(new) 10.02.2005, 05:10 GMT+1

i could do storyline. it might help me get some inspiration for my own mod, if i ever get the planning phase off the ground.

Apocsoft writes:(new) 10.02.2005, 20:28 GMT+1

If your intrested I could send you a pm on doomworld, the basic concept is already there, its just the personal logs and stuff which you read on computers scatterd around the base.

Chronoteeth writes:(new) 10.02.2005, 20:39 GMT+1

Nmn writes:(new) 16.02.2005, 21:53 GMT+1

The new weapons look decent, but the Flame thrower is too weak. I would really prefer more of it's side because it's a cute weapon I always wated to have since childhood >:) Ugh, I dislike the Justin Fisher-like Aliens TC setting. The grey doesn't really fit the Wayland Yutani Corporation Colony, I would much more prefer something metalic and rusty. Unreal has excellent textures to make such environment, and smart choices of Q2 ones could also do the job. In all, I would avoid Justin's stuff, because it's very outdated. In this case, Rips would be better. The yellow lighting creates a nice mood, but I would definately prefer a cold glow, in Aliens' case, suprisingly, white, green and red make perfect combinations (and lots of shadows) again, Unreal can be a great reference, especially the ISV Kran area. That aside, I'm really looking forward to this mod.

Apocsoft writes:(new) 17.02.2005, 20:33 GMT+1

Cheers chaps! Nmn the textures are kind of temp' and its suposed to be a space station,

I'll take a look at unreal, but i think im going to have to find a good source for the textures. I agree with the flame thrower, but theres not alot i can do (unless you wanna draw one :) Nmn..). Also Dark shadow has agreed to help out with 2 levels, so this will help no end and if dethtoll still wanna help that would make a team of 3!

Nmn writes:(new) 18.02.2005, 14:27 GMT+1

Apocsoft writes:(new) 17.04.2005, 20:59 GMT+1

Hi lobo, the main news atm is that im starting to import the new alien sprites, GOOD bye old crappy ones... I havent had time to draw the maps and i havent done anymore logs or anything plot wise(?), i have started the next floor you need to visit (sublevel 2), so you can get the level 3 key, so a new build could be a month away..

Ok Chrono i'll get onto it tonight!

Oh and new screenshots soon..

Lobo writes:(new) 17.04.2005, 22:04 GMT+1

BTW, the reason gmail is rejecting your zip is because it contains an .exe (the edge rc1 you included). You should remove it and just tell people were to get it IMHO.

Anyway, keep up the good work: looking forward to the next release :)
